The Global Health Semester is an innovative study abroad opportunity that combines classes with onsite learning - including 100 hours of for-credit fieldwork - in a variety of medical settings, including potential options such as a clinic in a Bedouin town, a large Israeli hospital, an STD prevention program, and an open clinic for migrant workers and refugees in Tel Aviv. This course would require students to study abroad during Winter and Spring. Special UCSD discounts apply.

PRIME (Application Due Jan)

Pacific Rim Experiences for Undergraduates prepares a future generation of science and engineering leaders who have the cultural competency and skill sets to compete successfully in the global workplace, by engaging students in an immersive, hands-on international educational experience, with a focus on research that contributes to real-world challenges.

The PRIME application is a two-part process. You must submit a: Preliminary Application (due Tuesday, January 21, 2014); and a Full Application (due 4pm on Monday, February 24, 2014).

The PRIME research internship takes place annually over a 30-week period that includes four phases:

1)Admission Process (Winter Quarter): Application (a student-written internship project based on the research interest and expertise of the dual mentors),interview and placement process;

2) Research and Cultural Preparation (Spring Quarter): On-campus, mentored research skill building and cultural competency development;

3) Research and Cultural Internship (Summer): Summer internship at the host site and ongoing cultural competency development through weekly reflection essays; and 

4) Re-entry Activities (Fall Quarter): (a) Participating in workshops to systematically reflect on the international experience and to describe it meaningfully in a professional resume; (b) sharing the experience with other students during study-abroad info sessions, in meetings with student organizations and at UC San Diego’s Admit Day; and (c) continuing the research in the UCSD mentor’s laboratory with ultimate goal of publishing the research.
